Fed: No plans to send Australian peacekeepers to Dili - Downer
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says there are no plans to send more Australian peacekeepersto East Timor after a day of rioting in which up to five people were shot dead.
He says the Australian troops in the United Nations peacekeeping force in East Timorare not involved in controlling the riots which left the capital Dili in ruins.
Hundreds of protesters went on the rampage yesterday, torching cars, a supermarketand looting offices after the shooting of a student by police earlier in the day.
Mr DOWNER says the situation has calmed down and is expected to improve but it is aconcern the situation got as much out of control as it did.
Large numbers of foreigners are reported to have fled Dili but the Department of ForeignAffairs and Trade says there has been no official evacuations of Australians.
