QLD: Abuse compensation award overturned
The Queensland Court of Appeal has overturned a half a million dollar compensation award to
a former newspaper employee who alleged she couldn't cope with her abusive and threatening
boss.
43-year-old MARILYN ABIGAIL ARNOLD, of Bundaberg, in south east Queensland, had won a
Supreme Court law suit against MIDWEST RADIO, owner of the far north Queensland free local
weekly newspaper, the Townsville Independent.
Ms ARNOLD had alleged she developed a depressive psychiatric illness because of constant
abuse from the paper's local manager GEOFF WILLIAMS while she was sales manager between August
and December, 1991.
In a split decision the Court of Appeal found a psychiatric opinion at trial may have been
based on inadmissible evidence.
